2013 Most Creative Give to the Max Campaign: College Possible

Jeff Achen, GiveMN Digital Strategist 11/8/13

The winner of the 2013 Most Creative Give to the Max Fundraising Campaign Award is College Possible!

College Possible’s planning for #GTMD13 started on November 16, 2012: the day after they had their most successful Give to the Max Day ever. They brought their team together to evaluate what they could improve on for 2013. They focused on building excitement and spreading the word about #GTMD13 throughout the month leading up to November 14, 2013. This included updating staff email signatures, mailing an invite to a "Superpower Hours" open house, and recruiting "Social Media Sidekicks."  On November 1, they announced a $15,000 matching gift from the Mahle Family Foundation and asked their supporters via email and social media channels to start scheduling their gifts.  Their print mailings and e-newsletters featured a #GTMD13 "Superheroes" theme. Two different superhero themed postcards were mailed to supporters inviting them to attend Superpower Hours and to be a hero on Give to the Max Day.

They also created three unique videos for #GTMD13: a promotional video featuring a costumed superhero to serve as the feature video on their GiveMN page, a special video featuring a student thanking donors for their gifts, and an entry for the Youthprise Give to the Max Day Video Contest.

They’re planning a full day of activities on Give to the Max Day, both online and off to include:

  • Reaching each donor with a personal thank you within minutes of their gift, even if it’s the wee hours of the morning!
  • "Thank You Mobs": After a successful debut last year, College Possible "Thank You Mobs" are back! Teams of three or four College Possible AmeriCorps members will surprise as many donors as possible at their home or office with a message of thanks, a cupcake from Yum! Bakery, and a chance to take a photo wearing a custom College Possible cape! Several mobs will also feature fully-costumed superheroes!
  • Prompt Acknowledgement: Sending acknowledgement letters to all #GTMD13 donors on Friday, November 15.
  • Asking supporters to spread the word about College Possible on Give to the Max Day through all available channels.
  • They’ve recruited “sidekicks” to be advocates on social media on #GTMD13 who will post, tweet, share, like and generally create buzz all day. In addition, their Twitter feed (@SaraDziuk) and Facebook page will be taken over by superheroes!
  • Hosting “Superpower Hours” at their brand new office from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on November 14. The event is an open house celebrating all the ways supporters saved the day on #GTMD13. All are welcome to enjoy food, drinks, live music on two stages, and the camaraderie of fellow College Possible heroes: advocates, donors, AmeriCorps members, staff, and other friends of College Possible. The event will also feature a superhero photo booth, superhero-themed crafts, live updates on College Possible’s #GTMD13 progress, remarks from CEO Jim McCorkell and Twin Cities Executive Director Sara Dziuk, and opportunities to make a gift at multiple giving stations, including staffers in capes roving the party with iPads.
  • In addition to several emails ahead of #GTMD13, they will also send a kickoff email in the early morning, an update highlighting their progress towards the match in the afternoon, and a wrap up with final results after midnight.

College Possible has set ambitious goals for #GTMD13: Raise at least $50,000 from at least 200 donors. They also aim to bring in at least 80 first-time donors to College Possible and receive gifts from 60% of the donors who have given on past Give to the Max days. All of these benchmarks are between 25% and 60% higher than their results from 2012. Their $15,000 match is a 50% increase over last year and will help inspire supporters to reach these goals.

From their application: "While other campaigns focus attention on programming or giving or those benefiting from the services nonprofits provide – certainly all worthy pursuits – our #GTMD13 campaign is all about our supporters. In fact, it’s the most donor-centered campaign College Possible has ever embarked upon. We are so excited to celebrate the heroes among us and inspire them to continue their superhuman efforts on November 14th and beyond."

GiveMN joins the Association of Fundraising Professionals Minnesota Chapter in congratulating College Possible on an amazing campaign that we hope serves as a shining example of what's possible when an organization gets creative, ambitious and truly puts their hearts and minds into communicating their mission.

Friday! Friday! Deadlines Are on Friday!

Olivia James, Nonprofit Outreach and Partnership Coordinator 10/30/13

The days are rolling past and we’re inching closer and closer to Give to the Max Day 2013! And as we get closer, deadlines are whizzing past. But wait! They haven’t yet, and you need to know ALL ABOUT this Friday because it is the day for Give to the Max Day prep. We’ve got all sorts of things happening that you need to know about, so here’s the low down, the 411, the info about Friday, November 1.

1. CONTESTS!

This Friday is the deadline for both of our contests. I’m going to give you a tip: we don’t have many entries for either contest yet, so your odds are good! We’ve got the Youthprise Legacy of Change video contest: you could win $5000!!!! Who doesn’t want to get in on that? Details are here: http://blog.givemn.org/give_mn_blog/what_is_your_legacy_of_change_video_contest/

If you don’t have time for a video, what about a creative campaign? We’ve been out at trainings, talking to you and your smiling faces, and we KNOW you have some amazing ideas about how to make the most of Give to the Max Day. We want to hear from you! Tell us about what you’re planning and you could win $500! Applying is quick and painless, hear all about it here: http://blog.givemn.org/give_mn_blog/most_creative_give_to_the_max_fundraising_campaign/

2. LIVESTREAM

As many of you know, we’ll be doing interviews at the Mall of America from 9-6 on Give to the Max Day and livestreaming those! This will be done through a lottery system of people who sign up right here: http://blog.givemn.org/give_mn_blog/gtmd13_livestream_registration/. But the VERY IMPORTANT part of this is that the registration will be CLOSING this Friday: that’s right, it’s your last chance to put your name in the pot to be interviewed on stage at Mall of America ALL ABOUT your organization. We want to hear from you, so make it work (Tim Gunn anyone?)!

3. NEW PAGES

We know there are still a few of you out there scrambling to get started for Give to the Max Day, and this section is for you. If you need to have your organization added to GiveMN, this Friday is the most important day for you, because it is the last day to get your organization added. If you apply after that, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to get you up and running before Give to the Max Day (although we will of course put out heroic efforts to do so). We would also suggest that if you want new administrators added to your page, you get that done before Friday. We can keep adding through Nov 7, but everyone’s life will be easier if you have all your administrators added and working full steam ahead by this Friday!

4.  SCHEDULED GIVING

We saved the best for last here…SCHEDULED GIVING OPENS ON FRIDAY! We gave you the whole scoop on scheduled giving earlier this week, but we’re so excited we had to tell you twice. Starting this Friday your donors can schedule a their donation to you on GiveMN and their donations won’t be processed until Give to the Max Day. This Friday is the day!

GiveMN partnered with Minnesota R&B band Mint Condition and their record label Shanachie Entertainment to sponsor the “Unsung” video contest. Individuals were invited to create a video to honor their own unsung hero—be it a mother, father, friend or mentor—using Mint Condition’s song “Unsung” which was written by Mint Condition Keyboardist Lawrence Waddell in honor of his own unsung hero—his mother.

GiveMN, Shanachie Entertainment and the manager and band members of Mint Condition wish to thank all of the contest entrants for taking the time to share such amazing videos of their heroes.

“We are extremely touched that all of the video submissions encapsulated the emotions we tried to convey with the song,” said Waddell. “We learned about parents, children, spouses, mentors and soldiers who have lived distinguished lives and left incredible legacies—all of whom were unsung. Thank you to each and every person who entered the contest for sharing these very personal and heartfelt tributes.”
